A root canal involves therapy below the gum line to treat a diseased or damaged tooth root. A healthy root is needed in order to preserve the integrity of the tooth structure. Should the root or tooth structure be unsavable, an extraction may be recommended and other alternatives for tooth replacement will be recommended.
